Web Design FAQ
The questions we get asked most, answered properly — including the ones where the honest answer is not the one that sells.
Getting started
Do I need a website for my small business?
Yes, for almost every business. Even customers who find you through word of mouth check your website before calling, and a missing or dated site loses that referral. A social media page is not a substitute — you do not control it, and it does not rank.
How long does it take to build a website?
Three to five weeks for a typical small business site, from kickoff to launch. Larger sites with many service or location pages take six to ten. The most common cause of delay is waiting on copy and photography, so we start collecting those on day one.
What should I prepare before building a website?
A list of every service you sell as a separate item, your service areas, any licenses or certifications, real photos of your work or premises, and three competitor sites you like. That is enough to start. We write the copy from there.
What pages does a small business website need?
A home page, one page per service, an about page, a contact page and location pages if you serve multiple areas. One combined "services" page is the single most common structural mistake, because it cannot rank for any individual service.
Website design process step by step?
Discovery call, written quote, content collection, design of the key page templates, your review, build, your review on a staging URL, launch with redirects and analytics, then handover training. Two revision rounds are included at the design and build stages.
Pricing and payment
How much does a website cost?
In the US, a custom small business website typically costs $3,000 to $10,000 upfront plus $100 to $500 a month for hosting and maintenance. Our monthly plan starts at $50 with no upfront fee and includes both the build and the ongoing maintenance.
Is a monthly website plan better than paying upfront?
A monthly plan is better when you would rather keep the capital in the business and want maintenance included. Paying upfront is usually cheaper over five years. The deciding factor is cash flow, and there is no wrong answer as long as you own the site either way.
What is included in a monthly website plan?
Ours covers custom design and development of a one to five page site, on-page SEO, hosting, security, speed optimization and a fully responsive build. No setup fee and no separate maintenance invoice. Everything needed to get the site live and keep it there is in the monthly price.
Are website subscriptions a scam?
Some are. The warning sign is a contract where you lose the site if you stop paying, or where the domain is registered in the agency's name. A legitimate plan gives you ownership from day one. Ask that question before signing anything.
Do you offer nonprofit pricing?
Yes, registered 501(c)(3) organizations get a reduced rate on all monthly plans. More useful than the discount is usually the donation flow work, since cutting steps out of the giving process typically raises completed donations more than any price reduction saves.
Choosing who to hire
How do I choose a web design company?
Time how fast their own site loads on your phone. Check whether they publish real prices. Ask for a client you can call. Ask who owns the domain if you leave. Those four filters remove most of the market, and what remains is generally worth talking to.
Web design agency vs freelancer — which is better?
A freelancer is cheaper and faster for a small, well-defined project. An agency is safer for anything ongoing, because a freelancer who gets busy, ill or bored leaves you stranded. Ask either one what happens to your site if they disappear.
Custom website vs website builder?
A builder is right for a simple site you will never grow and never optimize. Custom is right when search traffic matters, when you have more than a handful of services, or when you need the site to do something a template cannot. The difference shows in year two, not month one.
Should I use a website template or custom design?
A template gets you live faster and looks like the fifty other businesses using it. Custom design costs more upfront and is worth it when you compete on credibility. For a $70,000 pool build or a legal retainer, looking distinctive pays for itself.
Do I get to keep the website if I stop paying?
Yes. The design, the content, the code and the domain are yours from day one. If you cancel we export everything, hand over every credential and help your next developer get it running. Any plan that does not work this way is renting you a website, not building you one.
Search and AI visibility
How do I make my website show up on Google?
Have a separate page for each service and each location, publish content that answers real customer questions, make the site fast on mobile, and earn links from local directories and suppliers. Then wait — meaningful movement takes three to six months, not weeks.
How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?
Three things in order: allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall, get listed in the directories AI systems draw on, and publish content that answers specific questions in a directly quotable form. Most businesses fail at the first step without knowing it.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No, but click behavior has changed. AI answers absorb informational searches, while commercial searches still produce clicks. The practical response is to weight content toward commercial intent and toward being citable, rather than chasing informational traffic that no longer converts.
Does site speed affect Google rankings?
Yes. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking signal, though a modest one next to content and links. The larger effect is commercial: mobile visitors abandon slow pages before seeing anything, so a slow site loses conversions well before it loses rankings.
After launch
Do I need a website maintenance plan?
Yes, and it is included in our monthly price. Unpatched sites are compromised routinely, and a hacked site can lose rankings for months. Maintenance also covers the less dramatic reality that content goes stale and somebody has to change it.
What does website maintenance include?
At minimum: hosting, SSL, daily backups, software updates, security scanning and uptime monitoring. All of that is inside our monthly price, because the most common failure is not a dramatic hack — it is a site nobody has touched in a year quietly sliding down the results.
Can I edit the website myself?
Yes. Every site is built on a standard visual editor with no page builder license to buy, and we record a walkthrough of how to edit each section. Most clients still send edits to us, but the option is genuinely there and it is your site.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep the website, the code, the content and the domain. We export everything, hand over every credential and help your next developer or host get it running. No exit fee, and no minimum term after the first three months.
How often should I redesign my website?
Every four to six years for a full redesign, with smaller improvements continuously. Redesigning more often than that usually means the original build was not extensible. Redesigning less often means you are losing conversions to a dated experience without noticing.
